Cats are small mammals that are carnivorous and have been connected with human beings as companions, pets and friends for over 9,500 years. The cat is also sometimes referred to as a house cat or a domestic cat ands many people find that kittens are every bit as adorable as full grown cats.

Cats are predatory in nature and they are known to hunt over 1,000 species of animals if it is necessary to do so. Big cats in the wild comprise such animals as the lion (the king of the jungle), the tiger, the panther, the cougar and the cheetah. There is a superstition about a black cat that you never want one to cross your path so black cats tend to not be as well liked as cats of other colors.

Felines are often the source of funny cat videos such as in looking at the Cheshire cat, or a cartoon featuring a funny cat such as the cartoon Garfield or perhaps cute kittens in a group. There is such a thing as cat scratch fever and funny cats as well as cats and dogs can provided hours of entertainment to their owners.

Cats make a variety of sounds in regards to cat language, often depending on their mood and what they want at the present time, whether it be food, attention, to go outside and so on. Cats can mew or meow and they can purr, in contentment, hiss, chirp, squeak, click, grunt or growl.

Cats generally weigh between 5.5 pounds and 16 pounds while some breeds can grow as large as 25 pounds, an example of this being the Maine Coon. It is not wise to overfeed your cat or kitten as this can lead to a multitude of health concerns. Some cats have been known to weigh as much as 50 pounds while extremely tiny cats that are 4 pounds or less have also been identified. Neither one of these scenarios is very healthy for a cat.

Cats conserve a great deal of energy by sleeping and they tend to sleep more as they age. How many hours a day they spend sleeping varies but it is usually anywhere from 12 to 16 hours with 13 to 14 hours considered to be the norm for most cats. Some cats can even sleep, as much as 18 to 20 hours in a 24-hour span of time but this is most common when they are sickly.
