Cat illnesses are very common and cats can show very few symptoms of problems or in other cases a number of cat illness symptoms. There are many common cat or kitten illnesses and cat sickness ids not something to be taken lightly. If fleas are causing your cat some problems then schedule a trip to the veterinarian as soon as possible. One type of cat illness is known as feline lower urinary tract disease (or FLUTD). This is the general term given to a describe a number of different urinary tract problems a cat can develop such as cystitis, urinary obstruction or kidney stones. Some veterinarians will call this condition Feline Urologic Syndrome (FUS).
When it comes to this cat illness, it affects cats of both sexes and occurs in approximately one percent of all felines. Males tend to be more susceptible to this problem due to the type of urinary tract they have. This is a type of cast illness that is not just common in Persians but in a variety of cat breeds. It is believed that some brands of cat food can cause the formation of crystals in the urinary system, which can lead to kidney stones. Not drinking enough water can also be a cause of this type of cat illness.
The cat sickness symptoms of FLUTD include pain during urination, and dribbling urine outside of the litter pan. An excessive licking of the genital area is another symptom of FLUTD as is blood in the urine, squatting and straining during urination and attempting to urinate with little if any success. If your cat is urinating outside of his litter pan he should definitely be looked at by a vet to see if he is suffering from FLUTD. These cat illness symptoms should never be overlooked, as the condition can easily get worse.
A diagnosis of this cat illness will require antibiotics to get rid of any infection that has developed and the diagnoses for your male cat could call for a catheter if a blocked urethra is to blame for the condition. FLUTD can be a kitten illness or a cat illness and it is not easy to prevent, as the reason it occurs in the first place is not known. One rule of thumb to do your best for your cat to prevent an illness such as FLUTD is to make sure your cat always has a fresh bowl of water to drink (and more in the summer months) and keep his litter pan clean and fresh at all times.
