Do you know all you need to about cats? If not then you should take some time to learn, as cats are fascinating creatures. Did you know that domestic cats are extremely capable of sprinting at an estimated 31 miles per hour? It's true, they are. However tall a cat is in stature he is capable of jumping five times as high. Approximately 30 percent of a cat's lifetime is spent doing personal grooming.
When a cat runs or walks, first he steps with both his left legs, then he uses both his right legs and so it goes. Surprisingly a cat brain holds more in common with a human being's brain than it does with that of a dog. Studies have shown that the parts of the brain in a person that are responsible for emotion are identical to that of a cat's.
Across the globe there have been 100 different breeds of cats that have been identified, but who knows, there could be more yet to discover. Of these100 known breeds, only one of these, the Maine Coon, is a domestic type that is native to the United States. When a cat is scared the fur on its body will stand up evenly all over however when the cat feels threatened in any way or is ready to pounce or attack the fur will stand up ramrod straight in a narrow band only along the cat’s tail and spine.
But the fun facts about cats continue. Of all mammals, cats have the biggest eyes in comparison to the size of their body. When cats drink liquids they lap it up from the underside of their tongue as opposed to the top of their tongue. The oldest cat in recorded history lived to be 34 years of age, which in cat years is 306 years! Every year of a human's life equals 9 years of a cat's.
A dog is believed to have an estimated 10 different types of verbal sounds it makes while cats are more sophisticated in their verbal communication- they have 100 different types of vocalizations. For reasons unknown cats are most quick to respond to words that have an "ee" sound at the end like happy, or the name Andy. Cats do not like it when a person makes a sound like they are panting or sweating. Presumably it is a primal response because it makes a cat think that a dog is in hot pursuit of them. A Norwegian proverb reads, "It's better to feed one cat than many mice."
