Manx Cat

The Manx cat, sometimes called a cabbit or cymric if it is longhaired is a breed of cat with a unique type of genetic mutation. Manx cats from the Isle of Man, are born with a mutation of the spine, which accounts fro why their tail is shorter or in some cases completely nonexistent. On the other hand some Manx kittens and Manx cats have normal tails but this is the exception as opposed to the rule. A great deal of Manx cats have a small stub instead of a tail while others have when it akin to a fluffy ball of fur resembling a cotton ball. It is this aspect of the Manx that is characteristic of the breed.

Manx kittens for sale and Manx cats for sale are popular for the reason that these felines are different in their appearance from other cats. In the language of Manx spoken on the Isle of Man, Manx cats are referred to as "stubbin." They are extremely common on the Isle of Man and are an old breed of cat that are believed to have been around fro almost 300 years. There are many legends surrounding how the Manx cat came to have a stub for a tail or no tail at all.

The Manx cat has a rounded type of appearance because its hind legs are longer than its front legs, which creates a kind of continuous type of arch that reaches from the shoulders to the rear end of the animal. Manx cat breeders know that it is these qualities in the Manx cat that make it very sought after by cat owners.

Manx kittens are classified in relation to the length of their tails. There is the rumpy or dimple rumpy which means they have no tail at all; the rumpy riser or riser which means that there is a small stub of cartilage or a few vertebrae located under the fur; stumpy which means that there is a partial tail that resembles more of a riser than a tail and a longy or a tailed which means that there is a complete tail or the near semblance of a whole tail. Manx cat breeders have found that some litters contain Manx kittens are all different tail lengths.

The rumpy Manx is considered to be the ideal for showing while the tailed Manx cat and the stumpy do not qualify to be shown at all but make excellent pets. A Manx cat's health can be affected by the tail length. For example some Manx kittens born with stumpy tails or complete tails are very likely to develop a kind of arthritis that can lead to a great deal of discomfort and pain. This is one of the main Manx cat health problems.
